America (Ship) logbook, 1795-1796.

The logbook of the ship America details a shipping voyage from Salem, Mass., to Calcutta, with stops at Ascension Island and Saint Helena, Dec. 1795-March 1796. The ship's owner was Elias Hasket Derby; the master was Jacob Crowninshield; the logbook keeper was Nathaniel Hathorne. The ship's home port was Salem. The logbook includes a description of Ascension Island; mention of stowaways and an elephant, which may have been cargo on this or another ship. During its voyage, the America spoke the ship Fame and the schooner Johanna (out of Marblehead, Mass.). The author Nathaniel Hawthorne later used this logbook for some writing of his own.
